About Shantou University

Shantou University (STU), founded in 1981, is a comprehensive university jointly supported by the Ministry of Education, the Guangdong Provincial Government and the Li Ka Shing Foundation, and is the only public university in the world that receives long-term funding from the Li Ka Shing Foundation. The University campus is located in Shantou, a seaside city, covering a total area of 1.26 square kilometers with a floor space of 568,000 m2.

The University consists of 8 colleges and schools, namely, College of Science, College of Engineering, Medical College, Business School, Law School, Cheung Kong School of Art and Design, Cheung Kong School of Journalism and Communication，and College of Liberal Arts,. It enrolls qualified students from all over the country (including the Special Administrative Regions of Hong Kong and Macau, as well as Taiwan). Additionally, STU has a Graduate School and a School of Continuing Education. Currently, STU has a staff of 1,602 and over 10,294 students and has nurtured over 100,000 graduates.

In September 2013, the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and Shantou University signed a Memorandum of Understanding for jointly establishing Guangdong Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT), an institution of higher learning in Shantou. In December 2016, the Ministry of Education approved the formal establishment of the Guangdong Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT).

Relying on three projects that were awarded funding under the Top-Tier University Development Funding Program of Guangdong Province, STU has made tangible efforts towards its goal of becoming a world-class university, and entered various world university rankings. STU's program of Clinical Medicine remained in the top 1% on a global list of programs based on ESI (Essential Science Indicators) data, and the ranking was raised by 197 places compared with the beginning of 2015. As the programs Chemistry, Biology and Biochemistry become more competitive, they are expected to enter the global top 1% of ESI-based ranking in the near future. STU faculty conducted a series of research focused on major social issues and cutting-edge technology, with the research findings published in global top journals, including Nature, Science, New England Journal of Medicine and PNAS. Since 2015, STU has been twice ranked within Nos. 601-800 in the "Times Higher Education World University Rankings", being the only Chinese mainland university founded after 1980 that enters the list. Also the University has been ranked in "The Times Higher Education BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings" and "Asian University Rankings". In 2016, STU was rated as a Four Star institution by the QS Intelligence Unit. In 2017, STU was ranked for the first time within Nos. 151-200 in the "Young University Rankings 2017", being one of two universities in Mainland China that enters the list. According to the statistics released in 2017, STU ranked No. 10 in China and No. 1 in Guangdong in terms of the number of its CNS(Cell/Nature/Science)-indexed papers.

Remarks：

1.For the newly recruited faculty who are with doctoral degrees as well as senior and vice-senior professional titles, Shantou University will offer their spouses without jobs each a subsidy of RMB 2,000 per month.

2.For International faculties, the University provides free housing(no more extra housing allowance will be provided), transportation allowances，paid vacations, medical benefits, and Chinese holidays.

3.For new faculties：

(1)Those who are elected for the"Guangdong special support Project"to fund Scientific and technological innovation top young talents will be provided with a grant of RMB 500,000 as living allowance.

(2)Those who are elected for the "Sailing Project" to fund young talents with doctoral degrees will be provided with a one-time grant of RMB 200,000 as living allowance.

(3)Those who are elected for the "Sailing Project" to top young talents will be provided with an annual living allowance no more than RMB 1 million, for 10 years at most.

4.For new postdoctors:

(1)Those who are elected for the"Guangdong special support Project" to fund Scientific and technological innovation top young talents will be provided with a grant of RMB 500,000 as living allowance.

(2)Those who are elected for"Pearl-river Talent Funding Project" for Introducing Overseas Young Talents,A total of RMB 600,000 funding will be granted to each qualified post-doctoral fellow by the Guangdong Finance Department, in two years; The Guangdong Finance Department will allocate a housing allowance of RMB 400,000 to each who will sign a working agreement or labor contract with Shantou University after completing their research with the funding of this project.

(3)Those who are awarded funding under the"Sailing Project"to fund postdoctorals will be provided with extra living allowance in accordance with government regulations.
